ECONOMIC CAMPAIGN

This campaign is meant to address the false economic message from the phosphate industry and the government agencies that currently serve the industry. These officials are all proclaiming that phosphate mining is the major economic engine for the region and cleaning up selenium could destroy mining jobs and even destroy the crops of regional farmers. This false propaganda is designed for one reason - to help approve new mines and new pollution while continuing to delay clean up. In other words, to increase profit margins for phosphate companies at the harm of clean water and public lands.

Our campaign argues that clean up, while costly for companies earning record profits from public resources, will actually create many new jobs and help future mining proposals. Clean up of selenium contamination also secures other economic industries that are vital to a diverse economy such as tourism, recreation, and retired income. We do not oppose phosphate mining. We want these companies to be responsible and clean up their pollution.
